There is a strong and persistent thread of popular culture which imagines that we can fly, from Icarus right through to Superman. And over the last century or so, we’ve found a multitude of ways to realise this ambition through science, engineering and arts.

The invention of aircraft was one of the crowning achievements of the 20th century; yet now environmentalists argue that air travel represents a huge threat to a sustainable future. Bumblebees mystified physicians for years by propelling their substantial weight from flower to flower. President Obama’s endorsement of drones in warfare has discredited his government in the eyes of his former supporters.

For the next Conspire we are seeking specialists, experts and dedicated hobbyists to use these words as a springboard to educate and provoke our audience.

Conspire is a bi-monthly evening event of talks, performances and demonstrations that aims to spark discussion and find common ground between disciplines. We focus on work that uses unusual creative means to communicate poignant and polemical subjects. For this event we will curate three contributors and another four will be selected from public submissions.

We are open to any interpretation of the theme, particularly contributions that have a basis in political ideas, scientific investigation or those that have particular artistic merit.

We are seeking sculptors to exhibit on our rooftop to an estimated 2 million people over a month.

Our roof overlooks the Eastbound train lines from London Bridge, and in 2014 we embarked upon a mission to showcase ambitious and polemical public sculptures from this spot. In May we hosted a pilot project, which aimed to draw attention to the vast quantities of plastic pollution in our oceans and food chains. Through social media networks we reached 379,250 people with our hashtag #PlasticLunch and alongside this worked with 160 children from local schools and pupil referral units in a series of art workshops. We want to deliver another rooftop project in Autumn 2014. 

We can also support in the delivery of this project, helping to seek funding, promote the piece and manage the project. The audience will be going past on a train, so the sculpture needs to be large and bold to attract passing commuters and rail passengers. As an organisation we have a particular interest in work which has a political or social resonance and a measurable impact. This theme of the event is Cityscapes and will form part of Ensemble Perpetuo’s inaugural season.  ensemble Perpetuo will be performing  both contemporary and more traditional classical music that has been inspired by various cities across the world. They are most interested in finding individuals and collectives who think they would like to contribute either performances that will be interweaved with music, or exhibitions that can be displayed across the entire building as part of this festival. We are trying to create an immersive experience for visitors that enriches the musical performance from being a traditional concert into something that is cross-disciplinary and attracts a wide variety of people who are interested in experiencing music in a completely different context.

Roxanne teaches an hour-long class open to students of all levels. The class blends together flowing movements with some longer holds in certain postures to work deeper into the body. Each class finishes with a led relaxation to leave you feeling calm and balanced.

Roxanne is a 200 hour trained yoga teacher who studied traditional hatha yoga in India. She was drawn to this particular teaching because although there are many differing styles of yoga that appealed, each posture ultimately has its root in this tradition.

When she was a teenager, she suffered from chronic back pain caused by scoliosis of the spine for which she was taking pain medication on a daily basis. After trying many solutions, she was amazed to find that a regular yoga practice was the only thing to relieve the pain. Since then, she has been in love with the transformational power of the practice.

Five years on, she decided to train as a teacher so that she might share her passion and create classes that bring together all the elements that inspire. She is excited by the fact that as a teacher, she must always be a student with endless lessons to be learned.

She is influenced by meditation and mindfulness, and brings this inward focus into her classes.

Her classes blend together flowing movements and longer-held postures, which go deeper into the body. Her classes are always light-hearted and playful, encouraging the students to challenge themselves whilst always remaining compassionate.

Collaborators sought for event in 2015 with Ensemble Perpetuo

About the class

Aya’s love and passion for yoga began from an impromptu drop in class and since then has begun the journey to learn more.

Aya is yoga alliance certified 200HR and completed her teacher training in India with Lara Baumann. With also a personal training background Aya’s aim is to tailor and create a practise that listens to our minds and bodies combined with strength training and functional movements. From a greater awareness of your surroundings and emotions her aim is to be able to ultimately cultivate a balanced healthy happy life.

Aya teaches a dynamic vinyasa yoga, this is a flowing practise with breath synchronising movements. Adaptations and adjustments are taught and this class is suitable for all levels so all are welcome!

We currently have an opportunity for an independent  teacher to run classes in The Hub space at 47/49 Tanner Street. The space is suitable for a variety of classes, such as yoga, dance, singing, pilates, drawing etc. The use of the space would be free, provided that you can be flexible and aware that we may need to cancel or rearrange the class if we have a commercial booking. If you think you may be interested in running a class please read on.

What we can offer:

• Free use of the Hub space any weekday evening, with classes starting around 18:30.
• Publicising your classes to our network.

What we would need from you:

• An understanding that we could cancel the class when a booking comes in and that you would need to notify students. Of course we will try to give as much notice as possible, but due to the nature of our bookings occasionally things come in quite last minute.
• You would be responsible for running the class, recruiting students, charging an appropriate amount to cover your fee and expenses (please bear in mind though we would like the price to be accessible to a range of people). This opportunity is therefore probably most appropriate for a teacher already practicing elsewhere.

Other things you should consider:

• There are no curtains in the Hub. The street outside is fairly quiet but it is possible for people to look in.
• Classes would need to be free for our small staff and volunteer team.

Shout it from the rooftop!

A unique opportunity for an ambitious artist to showcase their work to thousands of people every day.  Our roof is at eye level with the oldest railway line in London which leads in and out of London Bridge station. Thousands of commuters pass by every day and we think that we should give them something spectacular to look at. We want to give an artist or collective the chance to create a large eye catching sculpture/installation which will attract the eyes of people from the trains and give them something to think about. Think of it as a ‘fifth plinth’ or ‘under the baobab tree’ project. We cannot offer materials but would be willing to support funding applications for these costs. This will be a semi-permanent project, able to live outdoors for at least 3 months, maybe more…
